Before Brexit, the EU's "Roam Like At Home" rules meant your UK contract worked in any EU country with no extra charge. From 2022 onwards, UK networks were no longer obliged to honour this — and most quietly stopped.

Which providers to AVOID for EU travel
Three big networks make EU roaming genuinely expensive in 2026:
EE (£2.59/day) — fair use cap means heavy users get throttled after 50GB. Their "Roam Plus" upgrade is £15/month bolted on top.
Vodafone (£2.81/day) — the most expensive of the four major UK networks. Plans now require an "Xtra" upgrade to include roaming, which adds £4-£6/month to whatever you were paying.
O2 (£2.59/day on newer plans) — older O2 plans (2021 and earlier) still have free roaming, but anything signed since mid-2022 charges. Read the small print.
What to check before signing any UK SIM contract for travel
